Made from green oak, the 12ft tower at the town's Toll's Meadow nature reserve, incorporates a gentle ramp, instead of steps.

It means wheelchair users, and families with children in pushchairs can easily reach the top, as demonstrated at the official opening on Saturday.

Music from a brass quintet and the presence of the town crier added to the carnival atmosphere, as Mayor of Wymondham Len Elston performed the ceremony in glorious sunshine at the four-acre wetland site in the Tiffey Valley.

John Wood, chairman of the Tiffey Trail's group, said: “It is a super vantage point in a lovely area.”

The tower provides a second focal point for the many walkers and family groups who enjoy exploring the five miles of trails along the valley, the first opening at The Lizard last May.
