Attleborough 'heroes' hailed

PEOPLE who "go the extra mile" for Attleborough were hailed at the town's awards evening.

Mayor Vera Dale presented community awards at the annual town assembly in the Town Hall to people who had been nominated by fellow townsfolk .

The evening began with community groups able to showcase their activities and achievements before the start of the formal meeting, which was well attended with standing-room only.

Certificates of appreciation were awarded to 16 tourist and information centre volunteers for their time in promoting the town, logging the community car requests and dealing with all manner of unusual inquiries.

The framed certificates were presented to:

Ian Argo, for his friendly and helpful advice about medicines; Alan Fallows, for his work at the Connaught Hall; Karen Pettitt and John Taylor, for their work in organising the summer carnival; Gary Szabo, for his support and fundraising for youth facilities; Ray Gibb, for marking out the football pitches at Gaymer's Meadow; Eddie Alexander, for his fundraising charity cycle rides; Janet Newby, who put herself out to help others at the surgery; Glennis Firman, for her work with youth; Muriel Hammond, for her work in clearing and tidying Gaymer's Meadow; the Christmas Lights Committee, for their "fantastic" displays and the Christmas Carnival Committee for organising the event.

The Community Cup, presented to the person or organisation with the most nominations, went to Anne Tinker for her involvement with many groups in the town, including the WEA, Artline, St Mary's Church, Friends & Neighbours, and for being "hard-working, efficient and helping others - one in a million".
