Witnesses are being sought by British Transport Police after a car collided with barriers at a railway crossing as they were being closed by the signalman for an approaching train.

The barriers and vehicle were damaged in the incident at Station Road, Attleborough, at about 8.15pm last Wednesday, February 11.

A transport police spokesman said: 'A silver Renault Clio was seen to approach the crossing and collided with the barriers as the signalman was closing them. We have obtained the details and are appealing for witnesses.'

The spokesman said nobody was injured in the collision at the town railway station. The male car driver, who was travelling along Station Road towards the town centre, and the signalman have both been interviewed as part of the on-going investigation.

It is the third incident at a railway crossing in Attleborough in just over a year.

In February 2008, an 83-year-old woman was struck and killed by a train at a nearby unmanned crossing at Ley's Lane.

And in July, an elderly woman on a mobility scooter and the occupants of two cars narrowly missed being hit by a train as they drove over the manned crossing at Flowers Lane at Poplar Farm.

On both occasions, calls were made by local residents for work to be undertaken to improve safety at the crossings.

Anyone who witnessed the incident at Station Road is asked to contact Sgt Andrew Cook or PC Mark Ollett of the British Transport Police on 01603 623402.
