He is perhaps more used to the verbal jousting on the green benches of the House of Commons.

But Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman showed he was able to roll with the punches when he visited Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) - and even stepped into the ring for some pad work with one of the coaches.

The Conservative politician visited the club's premises in Wood Farm, Deopham Road to see its facilities and hear how it had grown from weekly sessions in a nearby school to a thriving organisation of nearly 250 members in just five years.

The club has recently secured £50,000 of funding from Sport England to help expand its site further, which will enable it to double its floor area and become one of the best-equipped boxing clubs in the East of England.

'This club has achieved extraordinary success since it was formed, giving young people real opportunities to conquer their fears and show what they are capable of,' Mr Freeman said, who recalled how he had boxed when he was younger.

In particular he mentioned Lily Devlin, one of the club's rising stars who he met on the visit last Saturday.

The club holds weeknight and weekend practice sessions for young people, not only giving them something to do but also take part in an activity which teaches them discipline and helps them to improve their fitness.

For those who want to go further, the club offers training to help young people pursue their dreams, delivered by fully-trained volunteer coaches.

However, Attleborough ABC relies on sponsorship from local businesses to fund travel to events and training equipment.

'They need out support and I will be encouraging as many local businesses as I can to explore the opportunities of sponsorship,' Mr Freeman said.

The club is only one of around 50 out of 950 boxing clubs in the UK to be awarded Sport England's club mark status.
