A small Norfolk village could see a significant increase in its population, as plans have been lodged for a new housing development.

An application has been submitted to South Norfolk Council for the building of 45 new homes on fields off Bunwell Road in Spooner Row, near Wymondham.

KCS development is hoping to build a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom properties including 15 affordable homes.

The proposals set out a vision for a "desirable place for family living" in the vacant site and have been met with mixed opinion within the small village, which has a population of around 800 people.

Spooner Row parish councillor Robert Foster has expressed support for the application due to the inclusion of affordable homes.

He said: "This is a small development and will help to keep the village alive. I expect the families will contribute to the good health of the area.

"I will be supporting the application due to the range of homes it will provide - young people have told me that they want to stay in the village but there just aren't the housing stock available for them."

However, Sue Hewitson, chairwoman of the council, said some local people had concerns about the size and location of the application, which has been "bubbling under the surface for years".

"There has been a huge amount of furore and we are listening to what residents have to say," she added.

The nine acres of agricultural land are located close to the centre of the village, which is home to a primary school, train station and pub.

The proposals will be considered by South Norfolk Council in due course.
