The pothole-pocked roads and failing footpaths across Norfolk to be fixed using a £4.5m council windfall have been revealed.

Thirty-four roads and 20 footpaths will have work done on them by Norfolk County Council in the coming year using money the government distributed after scrapping the northern leg of the HS2 rail route.

The Northern Distributor Road, Grapes Hill, Dereham Road, Chapel Field Road, Aylsham Road, Plumstead Road, St Stephens Street and Tombland are among Norwich roads where treatment will be carried out.

Roads in Cromer, King's Lynn, Hunstanton, Wymondham, Acle, Briston, Aylsham and Corpusty are also due to have work done.

The council will carry out surfacing work and use a product called Reclamite, where a spray is applied to the road, to rejuvenate the bitumen which binds the road surface together.

A total of £2.24m will be spent on those roads and £1.71m on reconstructing footpaths.

Footpaths in Norwich, Sprowston, Thorpe St Andrew, Great Yarmouth, Sea Palling, Hempnall, Heacham, Thetford and Swaffham are among those which will be repaired.

The work is due to be approved when the Conservative-controlled cabinet meets to agree the council's highways spending on Monday.

Graham Plant, the council's cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said: "Our three-year highways capital programme shows just how much investment we are putting into transport in Norfolk.

"Not only does this programme include maintenance and repairs for Norfolk’s roads – of which there are more than 6,000 miles – but it also includes public transport and helping residents move to more active travel options, such as cycling and walking."

But Rob Colwell, transport spokesman for the opposition Liberal Democrat group, said: "I’ve been over quieter and easier cattle grids in rural Norfolk than driving through the main roads around Gayton Road, Lynn Road, and Wootton Road in King’s Lynn.

"I welcome the news of more funds for potholes, but there is worry in the community that West Norfolk isn't a priority to Norfolk County Council, with temporary fixes instead of proper resurfacing."

Between April 2022 and October 2023, Norfolk County Council paid out almost £120,000 in compensation, after people made claims because of defective footpaths and potholes.
