WYMONDHAM College welcomed Dr Ian Gibson MP on Friday, to speak to students on a variety of subjects as part of a programme designed to give Year 12 and 13 students a wider awareness of social and political issues.

Dr Gibson began by giving an overview of his work as a backbench MP. He told the audience that while he is in the top 10 of rebellious back benchers and is often in the news for his disagreements with the Labour leadership on subjects such as the war in Iraq and tuition fees, he believes his job is first and foremost about representing his constituents in North Norwich.

Dr Gibson covered topics such as the current economic crisis, education, the future of the Labour Party and his role in it, the issue of underage drinking and the recent government advice and also the issues surrounding the third runway at Heathrow.

He encouraged the audience to get involved in issues that they feel strongly about.
