An Attleborough family will be braving 100 miles in the saddle to raise funds for blind veterans.

Ex-soldier Dave Bickel, 50, his 22-year-old daughter Amiee and her partner Jake Grossman, also 22, will cycle from London to Surrey during the Prudential RideLondon 100 for Blind Veterans UK.

The family decided to help out after meeting a former Royal Engineer who raises money for the national charity.

Mr Bickel said: 'I did a challenge where I wore a blindfold around the house, and it was a bizarre experience. I couldn't see my loved ones and realised I'd hate to lose my sight.'

Mr Bickel, who served for 23 years in Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, the Middle East and Afghanistan, completed the challenge last year.

He said: 'I cycle every week and I'm quite focused on it. I don't want to straggle and my goal is to do RideLondon in a good time, under six and a half hours, if I can.'

Miss Bickel said: 'Seeing my dad cross the finish line last year was an emotional moment for me.

'Cycling has become something my whole family does together and we've grown closer because of it.'

Mr Grossman joined the Household Cavalry at 16, taking part in ceremonial duties including trooping the colour.

He said: 'I know people whose lives have been drastically affected through past and current conflicts and it's reassuring to know that there are organisations, such as Blind Veterans UK out there who can help.'

He admitted he wasn't looking forward to the 'aches and pains' and 'being beaten by [my] girlfriend'.

The trio will be joined by three other ex-Royal Engineers in their group.

The family plan to fundraise for their ride by packing bags in a local supermarket and with collection tins and boxes in Attleborough town centre.

So far, they have raised more than £2,800.
