A charity which supports cancer patients in south Norfolk may have to dip into its own pockets to replace welcome signs defaced by vandals.

Volunteers at Star Throwers, in Wymondham, are considering having to make the difficult choice of using 200 of the charity's funds to pay for two new large signs outside its centre in Melton Road.

At some point on Saturday night, the signs were scrawled with indelible ink changing the organisation's name to Ninja Throwing Star Throwers and Porn Star Throwers.

One of the signs was only placed outside the centre a week ago.

Despite best efforts to remove the markings with paint thinner and petrol, staff have had to concede defeat and look into replacing the signs.

Police officers have visited the scene and an investigation is under way.

Star Throwers opened its doors at the end of 2009 and provides a centre were cancer sufferers can receive advice on the various treatments available, talk about their experiences and relax in peaceful surroundings. It is run by volunteers and exists off public donations.

Dr Henry Mannings, founder of Star Throwers, said: 'All the money that comes in goes to run this place. No-one gets paid there. About 200 was spent on getting new signs. It's money down the drain because of a couple of kids and their mindless activities. It's really very annoying.'

Anyone with information concerning the graffiti should call Norfolk Police on 0845 456 4567.
