Swimming: Diss Otters strengthen Winter League position

Following a terrific performance in Round One of the Winter League Diss Otters travelled to Stowmarket for Round Two.
With many of the swimmers having never competed in this pool they thrived on the challenge and finished third in their heat.
Outstanding performances came from Katie Nash in the 100m butterfly, setting a massive two-second personal best time to win the event, and Ryan Waters, who recorded Diss’ first win of the evening in the 100m breaststroke.
Under the enormous pressure of the ‘joker card’, both Katie Halmshaw and Alex Davidson swam close to their personal best times to achieve double points in the 50m breaststroke.
The boys’ team achieved a total of 76 points during the night, including a third place for Harvey Sarson in the 50m backstroke, a very good second for Jacob Blades in the 100m butterfly and two second places for Jordan King in the 100m backcrawl and breaststroke.
Ryan Hargrave dug in deep to hold on to fourth in the 100m butterfly, a position replicated by Daniel Brooks in both the 100m frontcrawl and backstroke, while Will Dickinson picked up points in two tough events the 100m frontcrawl and butterfly.
The girls amassed eight more points than the boys with a total of 84, many of which were obtained through some strong relays.
Lauren Smith started the gala off with a personal best in the first event, the 50m backcrawl.
Following this Emma Halmshaw set personal bests in both of her individual races and Stephanie Brown stormed to third in the 50m frontcrawl.
Hannah Blades was second in both the 100m frontcrawl and 100m backcrawl whilst Francesca Wallace was third in the 100m breaststroke, both in her own age group and the age group above.
The final points scorers were Caitlin Davy and Amber Smith both racing extremely well.
A great night of swimming was rounded off by strong performances in the final relays which has helped to put Diss in a great position overall in the league.
