Work has begun on nearly 160 homes in south Norfolk - with a long-awaited footpath along a dangerous stretch of road also given the green light.

Construction on the 156 properties on land north of Great Melton Road in Hethersett, known locally as the water tower field, started at the end of last month.

The application was submitted to South Norfolk Council in 2012, when more than 100 people wrote to express their concerns.

David Bills, Hethersett South Norfolk Councillor, said: “Apart from the fact that they didn’t want another 160 houses here, the other thing was that we needed a footpath on the opposite side of Great Melton Road - parts are quite dangerous.”

After winning a fight to have the path built, the focus turned on timing - with the developers hoping to start it after the homes had been constructed.

But Mr Bills said he was “delighted” when the council confirmed the footbath would be built earlier this year - and work has now started.
