The first meeting of the Light up Wymondham for Christmas group saw 17 people attend and start to plan how to perk up the town’s festive celebrations.

The group held a meeting on Friday night at Wymondham Martial Arts and Wellbeing Centre over claims the town’s Christmas lights are lack lustre.

The group hopes to raise enough funds to have at least lights on both sides of Market Street.

Chairman Karen Claydon said members would come up with costings for the next meeting and that a bank account would be opened by the group.

She also said it was too early to put a figure on how much the group would like to spend,

Mrs Claydon, of Clifton Road in the town, said: “It went really well. We had 17 people, some were business people from the town and we had a couple of councillors.

“We are setting up a bank account and getting costings.

It is a bit early to talk about actual costings. But we would like to have lights on both sides of Market Street. That is a start and we can do more than that if we can.”

Group members will report back on costings at the next meeting, with no date yet set for the next meeting.

As previously reported the town’s £4,000 festive lights had drawn criticism and unfavourable comparisons to Attleborough’s – prompting Mrs Claydon to set up the new group to get something done to improve the situation.
