Opening date for Wymondham Morrisons announced
A new Morrisons supermarket in Wymondham is set to open on August 4, it has been announced.
The “medium-sized” supermarket on Postmill Close, off Norwich Road, is expected to provide 200 jobs in the town.
A sign put up outside the site last week revealed its opening date.
Reaction to the development has been mixed, with excitement over its facilities tempered by concerns over the future of independent businesses.
Audrey Doyle, who lives on Orchard Way, said that she will still frequent traders in the town.
“I am looking forward to the Morrisons for general groceries and fish but still plan to buy meat and bakery products from the independent traders in the town.
“If we don’t keep using those little stores they won’t be there when we want them.”
The centre of Wymondham is rich with independent traders such as Disney’s Deli, an independent delicatessen owned by David Disney.
Mr Disney, who is also chair of Wymondham Business Group, said: “I think some members are fearful that this will further reduce the very low footfall already experienced in the town centre, whilst others are hopeful it will stop people driving to other towns that have already have budget offerings.”
The business group has worked closely with South Norfolk Council through the Market Towns Initiative, which aims to boost trade in the area’s market towns.
Mr Disney said that he hopes traders’ local produce would set them apart from the larger supermarkets.
“Of course, as with most high streets up and down the country, unless local people support them, they will lose them, and the town centre will die, like so many already have.
“Here in Wymondham we’re lucky to have a great variety of independent shops and we hope that number will increase as time goes on, and Wymondham continues to grow,” he added.
Joseph Mooney, county councillor for Wymondham, said he hopes that the competition of a larger store will benefit the town’s high street.
“Competition is the life of trade. I therefore believe that Morrisions arrival in the town will create more competition amongst the towns retail sector and that can only be a good thing for local consumers.”
The store is set to open from 8am to 9pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
