A £20.6m education shake-up in a Norfolk village has moved a step closer, with plans submitted for a new primary school and nursery.

Norfolk County Council has applied to itself to build a primary school and nursery with space for a combined 476 children at a site on Coachmaker Way in Hethersett.

The development is to consist of a school building catering for 420 primary school children, with a standalone nursery building for 56 children also on site.

The plans are part of a significant restructuring of schooling in the village, as the county council looks at ways of ensuring it will be able to cope with planned housing developments in the area.

The changes will see both Woodside Infant School and Hethersett Junior School becoming primary schools, with the former moving into the new site.

The site - costing £8m - will be large enough to allow to school to become two-form entry - meaning there will be enough classrooms for two classes for each year group.

While the plans have formally been submitted this week, parents were given a first look at an exhibition at Woodside at the end of June, while they were also displayed at the village hall in July.

Meanwhile, plans have also been submitted for an £8m expansion of Hethersett Academy, with a new teaching block consisting of 15 classrooms, two art rooms and a digital media suite proposed.

This development will also see changes to sporting provisions at the academy, including providing a full-sized football pitch, several smaller pitches and new tennis courts.

The new teaching block at the academy, which both primary schools will feed into, is also set across two storeys.

Meanwhile a further £4.6m is proposed to convert Hethersett VC Junior School into a primary.

Stuart Dark, acting chairman of the council’s children’s services committee, said: “This application is the next stage in our plans to create better school facilities for the growing community in Hethersett.

“We have committed £33m of investment for Hethersett and Wymondham where good and outstanding schools continue to cater for more pupils.”
