A group of green-fingered organisers will tell their village’s First World War story through flowers.

St Peter’s Church in Morley St Peter will be transformed into a colourful display of blooms this weekend for a World War One Flower Festival.

The two-day event will tell the story of the nine men who left the village to represent their country.

Ann Edwards, one of the organisers, said: “We’ve done a lot of research on the names on the memorial. One family lost three sons and we have also traced a sister in America who sent us photos.”

Photos, memorabilia and uniforms donated by local families will be on display, offering visitors a chance to walk through the village’s history.

Aiming to bring the community closer together, history groups from Deopham, Wicklewood, Hackford, Morley St Botolph have been encouraged to join.

“It is a real community event. We’ve been organising it for quite a while now, as it is an important thing for us all to remember,” she added.

Creative youngsters from Morley Pre-School have created a poppy out of tissue paper.

“We thought it was important to get everyone involved, particularly young people, so they know what is going on and we keep it in people’s minds,” she added.

A remembrance service on Sunday evening will see people pay their respects in silent tribute.

The event will run on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17, from 10am to 4pm.
