Group Lotus director David Hewitt was yesterday named by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg as an industry champion for the government’s Make it in Great Britain campaign to promote UK manufacturing.

Mr Hewitt has joined 29 other executives to promote the campaign. Group Lotus, which this week confirmed a slowdown in production at its Hethel production plant while it waits for the sale of parent company Proton to be completed, is one of five automotive companies to be represented. The move comes as the third bidding round of the government’s regional growth fund got under way following George Osborne’s announcement last year to increase the pot by £1bn to £2.4bn.

“Britain is a nation of innovators,” Mr Hewitt said. “Just look at all the brilliant products and inventions that have originated right here in the UK. Lotus is a great British company with a rightful place among the very best our country offers in both manufacturing and engineering.”
