A drink driver was caught after arriving at his estranged wife’s home while police were investigating reports that she had a gun.

Kevin Blades, of Green Lane, Quidenham, was found to be more than double the legal limit on September 14 on Isaac’s Road, Great Yarmouth.

The 41-year-old had 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

James Hartley, defending, said: “He is deeply apologetic for his colossal error. He lives about 40 miles away from his estranged wife and their children, but he collects them from her house.

“He had been drinking the night before and had a drink on the day before he picked his daughter up from school.

“Someone made a false report about his wife having a gun at her home and police were searching the house when he arrived. They could smell alcohol on his breath and he failed a roadside test.”

After pleading guilty to one charge of drink driving at Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, Blades was disqualified from driving for 18 months and fined £650. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £65 and court costs of £85.
