Almost £25,000 is being made available to further enhance Breckland’s five market towns and attract more visitors and businesses.

Last year, each of the town councils were asked by Breckland Council to draw up plans for how they could use the money to encourage residents and visitors to shop in the district’s towns and support new businesses to move in.

The proposals put together by the town councils in Attleborough, Dereham, Swaffham, Thetford and Watton were approved by Breckland Council’s cabinet at its meeting yesterday and will start to be implemented over the coming year.

Proportions of the funding, totalling £23,017, will be shared across the towns based on their populations.

The ideas put forward range from small scale cosmetic improvements such as replacing hanging baskets and planting trees, to boosting publicity and developing new marketing strategies, installing updated signage to help visitors navigate the towns, and organising events including heritage days and business expositions.

William Nunn, leader of Breckland Council, said: “Supporting the growth and success of our market towns is a key priority for Breckland Council and I am pleased that we are working closely with the local town councils and businesses in their areas to make best use of this available funding.

“The projects put forward will give visitors and new businesses even more reasons to come to our market towns, which will support their growth. They will also enhance the towns for our residents and existing businesses.”
