A vision for almost 90 homes in Attleborough has been given the green light.

Breckland Council gave the plans from paint brush and decorating manufacturer Hamilton Acorn, on Halford Road, outline planning permission at the end of October.

The proposals, which were submitted by Bidwells developers on behalf of the business in 2011, would see the factory demolished and 86 dwellings built on the six-acre site, with around one acre of open space with play equipment also planned.

Hamilton Acorn has three years to submit a reserved matters application to confirm the finer details of the application and building work must start within five years.

It is expected that 22pc of the properties will be affordable housing.

The town is earmarked for 4,000 new homes before 2026 - a figure which has provoked concerns over lacking facilities.

Richard Middleton, town councillor and chair of the neighbourhood plan steering group, said: “It has become the same as many applications - this one by itself is not going to be the problem. It will be the joint effect of all the others that raises the concerns over the infrastructure.”

In 2009, Hamilton Acorn announced it was moving its production to Sweden and China due to market pressures.

A spokesperson for the company said that there were no plans to move the business in the immediate future.

  • Attlebourough is in the Breckland district, not South Norfolk; the clue is in the large letters on the council building in the photograph.
