‘Americana’-themed Dannii’s Diner opens in tribute to a much-loved daughter
It’s a place she would have loved, and today it was filled with all the people who loved her.
Dannii’s Diner, a new cafe with a 1950s Americana theme, was officially opened by the Foster family in Thetford Road in Brandon.
Ann Foster and her daughter Sam, 24, who co-own the cafe along with Ann’s husband, Carl, donned flowing vintage dresses and served up milkshakes, muffins and other treats to scores of customers.
The venue is a tribute to Anne and Carl’s other daughter, Danielle, known as Dannii, who died suddenly last year of a severe form of muscular dystrophy (MD), aged just 25.
Dannii had been scheduled to have surgery for a gastric bypass a few weeks before she died from a heart attack attributed to MD.
Mrs Foster said much of the work on the venue was done by her husband.
She said she thought Danii would have liked the cafe.
Mrs Foster said: “She would have absolutely loved it and been so proud of her dad for what he’s done - he has done such an amazing job.”
“It’s really homely and it’s got a nice atmosphere. We’re very family-orientated, and we think that really shows.”
Several members of the Fox family, famous for the stunt motorcycle show, the Ken Fox Wall of Death, were special guests at the opening, and there was a display of motorbikes out the front including a classic 1920s Indian.
The Fox family also donated a large Wall of Death sign, and a door used in a Wall of Death stunt, as memorabilia for the cafe.
One family member, Luke Fox, cut a bright red ribbon to officially open the cafe.
He said: “We’re fully supportive of this. Dannii was a big Wall of Death fan so it’s nice to be able to support something that she loved.
“It’s a really nice theme and something different - more cafes should be like this instead of looking generic.”
Mrs Foster said: “Dannii was a huge motorcycle fan so it was brilliant they agreed to come and open it for us.”
The opening celebrations came three weeks after the cafe first opened its doors.
The cafe is open seven days a week, and also serves breakfasts, burgers, Sunday roasts and takeaways.
