Robert Bell, managing director at Bells Horticultural, said: "Our family has a long history of nurturing horticultural treasures and we are committed to preserving and enhancing the magic that makes Peter Beales Roses so special.

"It’s a true honour to be entrusted with the stewardship of this brand that means so much to so many."

The garden centre in London Road went up for sale with Christie and Co at a guide price of £1,450,000 in June last year.

In 2019, the centre had a £750,000 development to create its Rosarium Restaurant with a modern kitchen and space for 80 people.

Mr Bell said he would "carry forward the legacy" of the business while maintaining its integral elements including the garden centre, rose garden and breeding programme.
