Vintage gliders to descend on airfield
28 July 2010
Hundreds of glider pilots from around the world will be making a beeline for a south Norfolk airfield as it hosts a week-long international rally.
Tibenham Airfield is hosting the 2010 Vintage Glider Club International Rally from Saturday until August 8.
The airfield, which last held the event in 2000, is expecting about 300 pilots bringing more than 100 vintage gliders - some dating back to the 1920s.
During the rally, visitors will be treated to a fly-in by the De-Havilland Moth Club, vintage model flying and a visit from an autogyro which famously featured in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
Evening entertainment will also be provided, including international night where all participants are invited to create a feast representative of their home country, and a night of Norfolk traditions such as dwile flonking, welly wanging and morris dancing from the Kenninghall Morris.
Music from the South Norfolk Youth Swing Band will close the event on the final weekend.
Tibenham Airfield is a former USAF Liberator Bomber base and is now owned and run by the Norfolk Gliding Club, which has about 150 members.
